of Greece. This means that it has the most beaches of any other island. There are so many things to do while in Crete, as it combines sea and beaches with mountains and trails you will surely find amazing.

Another thing that is great about Crete is the way its citizens behave. Cretans are simple and peaceful, yet friendly and warm people with a great sense of hospitality. They always invite guests to have some rounds of their favorite drinks such as “tsikoudia” and “raki”. Do not deny to have a couple of drinks with them, it is considered an insult!

Crete is one of the most beautiful places of the Mediterranean. You should definitely spend some time there to see how the life is on this island and taste the local cuisine specialties. Witness a simple, yet exciting way of life and you will be looking forward to visiting Crete on your next chance!! Just a few days will convince you that is it more than worth the visit.

Cretans and history

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

cretansCretans are and have always been respected amongst the citizens of Greece for the way they choose to live. The first thing to know about them is how brave they are. Their bravery has been proved many times during the hard times of Greece such as the second world war. Cretans were the ones that stopped the endless German troops from reaching Africa, as Crete is the last area of land before Africa.

Cretans know no fear and can do anything for their freedom. When their freedom is threatened, they fight with whatever they are given, even with bare hands. On the other hand, their hearts are as warm as the Greek sun! They are free and proud men and if you ever visit Crete, you will get the chance to witness their famous hospitality and kindness.

These aspects of their character themselves make Crete a destination worth visiting!

chania creteChania is a major city in Crete, one of the biggest and most inhabited of the island. It is located by the sea and has an airport and, of course, a port for ferries. The gulf of Chania provides all a visitor would need to see; endless beaches with crystal clear seawater, camping facilities and watersports clubs. Northwestern of the airport and northern of the port you will find Kalathas (about 15km from the airport) beach and Livadi beach (about 20km from the airport). Fishing in Crete
I don’t know if it is the right picture for an article like “fishing in Crete”. I uploaded it just because I like it very much. This picture has been shot in Matala area (southern crete)

Fishing is a popular activity amongst tourist but also locals in Crete. It is an activity which started way back, in ancient times. You can easily find paintings of ancient Minoans fishing, as fish have always provided an ideal meal. Fishing can be divided in two categories: Fishing with bait and underwater fishing. Fishing with bait may not be as exciting or as effective as underwater fishing, but requires not much skills and is much easier.

General tips are not going fishing on very hot days when the temperature is high.
Another tip is to try avoiding going fishing on days with no wind, as it more likely to have much better results when there are waves because of the wind. Also pay attention in preparing good baits for the fish, such as warms, salty bread or shrimps. A good bait is more likely to attract and finally catch fish.

Famous and ideal spots for fishing are Marathi beach, the gulf of Chania and some spots near Ierapetra.

Generally, try to avoid fishing near ports because the water is not as clear as on other spots and try fishing in small gulfs for better results. Good luck!

Crete top vacation places - Kissamos beach

A famous destination of Crete is the beach of Kissamos, also known as Kastelli. Kastelli is located on western side of the island. Having arrived on the airport of Chania or on the port of Chania with a ferry, take the road to the west in order to reach Kissamos. The area combines characteristics that attract many tourists, such as beaches with crystal clear seawater, alleys in the small town of Kissamos that remind us of another, simple way of life. You will have the chance to see the stone-built houses and enjoy the peace of the gulf of Kissamos.
