Crete, the legacy of Minoan history and culture

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Crete is not only basked in sunshine for 300 days of the year but it is also steeped in some of the most interesting history of an ancient civilization that we know of today.

There was very little known about this civilization until important ruins and artefacts were discovered in Knossos (and elsewhere).

Crete history

These ancient tribes that inhabited Crete two thousand years before Christ were the Minoans, an ancient civilisation who exploited the beauty and abundant resources that were to be found on this exquisite Meditterranean Island. The Minoans exported timber, wine, currants, olive oil, wool, cloth, herbs and their much favoured purple dye.

They imported many things that were not found on Crete such as copper, other raw materials, gold, silver, ivory and precious stones that they adored so much.

The Minoans adopted many aspects of the different cultures with whom they traded including artistic ideas from ancient Egypt. It is evident that they traded with the Egyptians as well as the Syrians and we can see evidence of this in the wall frescoes and the precious gold artefacts that have been discovered on Crete.

Not much is really known about what happened to finish this wonderful period of Cretan history. We know that the Minoan civilisation was destroyed by a terrible fire that ravaged the island but we do not know how this was started. Many people have theorised as to what actually happened but the truth is that we may never really know what truly happened to this peaceful and beautiful civilisation.

The Minoans were the first European civilisation, they were a peaceful people and they established much of the culture that we know, admire and love about Greece today. They bought so much to the island from far away shores but they traded much of the timber leaving Crete the deforested island that we know today.

Greek culture owes much of the way it has evolved to this ancient civilisation that inhabited the island so long ago. From about the 27th Century BC to the 15th Century BC the Minoans prospered and flourished on Crete in a peaceful environment and they built many Palaces and Temples along with an infrastructure between towns and ports that were established around ancient Crete.

For the visitor who comes to the island today there is so much to see and discover about this ancient civilisation, their buildings, the way they lived and how they developed their culture. Many tourists marvel at the tranquil beauty of historical Crete and the phenomenon of the Minoans. The best way of experiencing this time warp is to hire a car and drive to all the marvellous Minoan sites that can be found around the island. It is truly an awe inspiring experience.

Music of Crete

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Crete has its own special music which is called Cretan songs aka ‘Kritika’. It constitutes as a variation of traditional Greek music and differs mostly because of the unique instruments that are used.

The dominant folk instrument of Crete is lyra, a three-stringed fiddle with a shrill sound. It is often accompanied by the Cretan lute (laouto) and the oud (outi) which is a pear-shaped stringed instrument similar to lute. These instruments make the Cretan music unique. You can see these instruments in the pictures below.

In addition, one form of Cretan songs are ‘mantinades’. They are small two-lines (usually) poems which are making a special rhyme. Cretans tease or praise each other using ‘mantinades’. Most of the times they are made instantly in proportion of the situation and they move from mouth to mouth. The best of them remain through the years and usually become songs.

Myths of Crete

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

There are many myths and tales around Crete in the mythology, the stories written in the ancient Greece by the Greek artists. People that take the time to look through the Cretan history and the Cretan mythology find it really interesting. A story that everybody likes is the one of the king Minos, or Minoas (names after the Minoan tribe and the Minoan times).

King Minoas was believed that possessed a great treasure in his palace and that an imaginary creature called the Minotaurus guarded the treasure.

That creature had half the body of a man and half the body of a bull and inhabited the labyrinth of the palace, killing anyone who entered it. It is very exciting to read about the way that young Theseus managed to enter and kill the legendary creature, then made it out of the maze with help from the king’s daughter, princess Ariadne.

More stories like this one are written down in the books of Greek Mythology, so if you liked it find similar stories in websites like Wikipedia. Even better, you could visit some of Crete’s magnificent museums! El Greco

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

This is an article about the famous Cretan artist, the painter El Greco. His work has been greatly appreciated, inspired other artists and made his famous.
Resources were taken from Wikipedia – “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Greco“. Accessed at 04.15.2008.

“El Greco (“The Greek, 1541 – April 7, 1614) was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. He usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with his full name, Domenicos Theotokopoulos (Greek: ????????? ?????????????), underscoring his Greek origin.

El Greco was born in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the centre of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before travelling at 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577 he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best known paintings.

El Greco’s dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century. El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school.

He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting.”

Cretans and history

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

cretansCretans are and have always been respected amongst the citizens of Greece for the way they choose to live. The first thing to know about them is how brave they are. Their bravery has been proved many times during the hard times of Greece such as the second world war. Cretans were the ones that stopped the endless German troops from reaching Africa, as Crete is the last area of land before Africa.

Cretans know no fear and can do anything for their freedom. When their freedom is threatened, they fight with whatever they are given, even with bare hands. On the other hand, their hearts are as warm as the Greek sun! They are free and proud men and if you ever visit Crete, you will get the chance to witness their famous hospitality and kindness.

These aspects of their character themselves make Crete a destination worth visiting!

A great celebration back then was tavrokathapsia, in which Cretans used to do tricks on wild bulls in a specially designed arena, as pictured above. It was a great honor and responsibility to participate in tavrokathapsia (see big image).

Ancient Cretan history

Ancient Cretans and especially Minoans seemed to worship bulls as a kind of god. As a matter of fact, in Hellenic mythology there is the myth of the Minotaurus (also known asThe Minotaurus Minotaur), a creature that had half the body of a human and half the body of a bull. Minotaurus was the keeper of the Minoan palace’s maze and killed everyone that entered it. Crete has much to teach its visitors about its ancient culture and civilization.
