Next, we have the main dishes for our traditional Cretan meal. The second part of our article about the top Cretan cuisine specialties and the favorite dishes of the locals.
So try one of the following dishes: If you love meat, order some pork chops or lamp chops or roast lamp. All Greeks love them! You could also order the famous mousaka dish, roast goat (really famous and loved in Sfakia) or “pilafi”. All above dishes taste delicious and you will only see how good they are once you try them. There are also the Cretan Kaltsounia, or Kalitsounia, for which there has been another article several weeks ago.
Don’t forget to try some of the famous Cretan drinks, such as Tsikoudia, Raki (pronounced rakee) and the Greek wine, which everbody loves so much.
Last but not least, try some of the delicious Greek desserts, like “baklava” and “Galaktompoureko”. Enjoy!

Ierapetra is one of the four prefectures of Crete and is situated on one of the southest spots of the island. The town of Ierapetra is perfect as it has everything someone will need. There are archaeological sites, numerous beaches nearby and great sports fascilities.
If you just want to stay and see the town, you have some really nice options. The port offers a magnificent view of the Libyan Sea and the view of the sunset from that particular spot is amazing too, as the sea is colored by the setting sun. There also are some fine cafes in the town that can serve you a cup of coff, providing the view of the Medieval Wall or the Medieval Port and the ruins of Ierapetra. There are many myths and tales around Crete in the mythology, the stories written in the ancient Greece by the Greek artists. People that take the time to look through the Cretan history and the Cretan mythology find it really interesting. A story that everybody likes is the one of the king Minos, or Minoas (names after the Minoan tribe and the Minoan times). King Minoas was believed that possessed a great treasure in his palace and that an imaginary creature called the Minotaurus guarded the treasure. That creature had half the body of a man and half the body of a bull and inhabited the labyrinth of the palace, killing anyone who entered it. It is very exciting to read about the way that young Theseus managed to enter and kill the legendary creature, then made it out of the maze with help from the king’s daughter, princess Ariadne.

One place you definitely have to visit is Spili village. Spili is located in the center of Crete, in a green area full of trees, a symbol of the nature of Greece and the beauty of the island.
Spili is famous for its products. There are plenty of shops in the center of the village, selling traditional Cretan products like Greek hone, the famous Mediterranean virgin olive oil and several kind of cheese, like Mitzithra, malaka cheese and, of course, Feta cheese. If you visit the village, don’t forget to visit the shops as well; you will be glad if you take some traditional products back home.
Spili is beautiful not only for its vegetation but also for the mountainous areas surrounding it. These areas are ideal for a walk and provide ideal panoramic view of the village, which is one of the best destinations on the Greek island. Visit the blessed village and you will remember it for the rest of you life.

Cretans are simple people who enjoy life and get the most of it; their attitude towards life is unique. They are warm and always invite visitors of Crete for some round of drinks! You do not know what hospitality is, if you have never been to Crete.
