Myths of Crete

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

There are many myths and tales around Crete in the mythology, the stories written in the ancient Greece by the Greek artists. People that take the time to look through the Cretan history and the Cretan mythology find it really interesting. A story that everybody likes is the one of the king Minos, or Minoas (names after the Minoan tribe and the Minoan times).

King Minoas was believed that possessed a great treasure in his palace and that an imaginary creature called the Minotaurus guarded the treasure.

That creature had half the body of a man and half the body of a bull and inhabited the labyrinth of the palace, killing anyone who entered it. It is very exciting to read about the way that young Theseus managed to enter and kill the legendary creature, then made it out of the maze with help from the king’s daughter, princess Ariadne.

More stories like this one are written down in the books of Greek Mythology, so if you liked it find similar stories in websites like Wikipedia. Even better, you could visit some of Crete’s magnificent museums! If you plan on visiting the island, check out the car fleet of Car Hire Crete and you will definitely find a vehicle to suit your transportation needs on Crete.

Spili springs

One place you definitely have to visit is Spili village. Spili is located in the center of Crete, in a green area full of trees, a symbol of the nature of Greece and the beauty of the island.

Spili is famous for its products. There are plenty of shops in the center of the village, selling traditional Cretan products like Greek hone, the famous Mediterranean virgin olive oil and several kind of cheese, like Mitzithra, malaka cheese and, of course, Feta cheese.

If you visit the village, don’t forget to visit the shops as well; you will be glad if you take some traditional products back home.

Spili is beautiful not only for its vegetation but also for the mountainous areas surrounding it. These areas are ideal for a walk and provide ideal panoramic view of the village, which is one of the best destinations on the Greek island. Visit the blessed village and you will remember it for the rest of you life.

Cretan lifestyle

Cretans are simple people who enjoy life and get the most of it; their attitude towards life is unique. They are warm and always invite visitors of Crete for some round of drinks! You do not know what hospitality is, if you have never been to Crete.

People of Crete are peaceful and as warm as the Greek sun. They are hard-working and like spending their free time on a nice traditional cafe to have some traditional Greek coffee or drink some raki. They support institutions such as friendship, family and peace on each chance they get and always have time to spend with their friends and families.

They are usually occupied with agricultural or fishing activities, as Crete is a big island and has much to offer to its people. The major cities on Crete, like Hania (Chania) and Iraklion (Heraklion) are pretty much like other big cities of Greece, like Athens, for instance. I advise those who plan to visit Crete to avoid its big cities and try seeing smaller villages, because this is where they will see what Crete is all about, the simple life of Cretans. The easiest way to reach them is by hiring a car from Car Hire Crete site.

Fishing in crete by a vehicle from Elite car hire Crete

Either you are just a visitor of our blog, or an experienced diver who wants to visit Greece and Crete, you might want to know some kind of fish around the island, so here’s a small article about this topic.

The first one is a quite common one around Greece, the scorpion fish (also known as Scorpaena in Greece). The scorpionfish might be impressive but pay attention, its back has stings are not just decorative, they are venomous. Don’t worry though, the scorpionfish rarely leaves the rocky and stony areas it inhabits so you try avoiding them if you want to avoid this venomous fish.

Another common fish found around Crete and the rest of Greece and Mediterranean as well is the Black Goby (Greeks know it as “Govios”). It is most likely to see Black Gobies near the Cretan shores and not in deep seawater. This kind of fish is always a top specialty for Cretans and they are considered a fine catch for fishermen.

Other common fish of Crete are the Atherinas, the Pearly Razorfish and, of course, the Octopus, which tastes great with the traditional drink of Crete, the “raki”! I hope this article was a little bit helpful to you. Enjoy Crete…

Why Crete?

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Greece is known, amongst others, for its great number of islands. Many of them worth visiting and are considered as top destinations, such as Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu and Paros (both in the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea). First of all, Crete is the biggest island

of Greece. This means that it has the most beaches of any other island. There are so many things to do while in Crete, as it combines sea and beaches with mountains and trails you will surely find amazing.

Another thing that is great about Crete is the way its citizens behave. Cretans are simple and peaceful, yet friendly and warm people with a great sense of hospitality. They always invite guests to have some rounds of their favorite drinks such as “tsikoudia” and “raki”. Do not deny to have a couple of drinks with them, it is considered an insult!

Crete is one of the most beautiful places of the Mediterranean. You should definitely spend some time there to see how the life is on this island and taste the local cuisine specialties. Witness a simple, yet exciting way of life and you will be looking forward to visiting Crete on your next chance!! Just a few days will convince you that is it more than worth the visit.
